A Study on the Recognition of Mental Health Professionals for the Recovery of Persons with Mental Disabilities

Abstract
This research explores to recognize the meaning of recovery for the persons with mental disabilities by mental health professionals using a qualitative methodology. The questionnaires were sent to the mental health institutions which agreed on the data collection. The purpose and significance of the study were thoroughly explained to the mental health professionals working in the mental health institutions or social return institutions in Busan?Gyongnam, Daegu?Gyongbuk areas. The data collection was conducted between July 25th and August 18th 2009, with 18 participants on this study. The data were collected based on the participants¡¯ statements. In total, 96 statements of the meaning of recovery were appeared after arranging the meaningful contents of the health professionals¡¯ statements on the meaning of recovery. These statements were collected and classified by similar contents, and then categorized by 31 characteristics and 9 higher categories which named by the researcher. The 9 higher categories include the ability to manage one¡¯s disease, self-empowerment, the ability to maintain everyday life, managing harmonious interpersonal relations, challenging life, keeping the occupational activity, improving social function, hope, and the change of family relations. Based on these results, theoretical and practical implications were discussed.
